I've always loved EPs from the moment my parents bought one The Beatles. 'With The Beatles' EP.
The idea of a 7" single with 4 tracks on rather than 2 seemed exciting and exotic. Commercially, it made sense because albums were expensive and out of the reach of many teens pocket money, where as the EP was more affordable for the fan who wanted twice as much music by their favourite band or singer.
From 1960 to 1967 there was an EP chart compiled by trade organisation Record Retailer and published by Record Mirror. By late '67 the album was taking over in popularity and EPs were being published less often, so the chart was discontinued in late December, thus depriving the Beatles Magical Mystery Tour EP a top spot.
It's interesting how big Paul Jones was in 1967. The film Privilege is a period piece about the nature of celebrity and popularity from which I've Been A Bad Bad Boy was taken as a top 5 hit. The Who had several EPs top the charts, as did the Beach Boys.
The other great things about EPs in the UK was that unlike singles they always came in a picture sleeve, usually laminated and this made them into very smart, upmarket objects indeed. I still hunt them out and some command high rpcies - especially those by the likes of the Yardbirds.
