When Deep Purple MK3 hit the road to promote the Burn album, no-one knew how things were going to work out with a new singer and bass player. But live recordings testify that they were some of the finest shows of that era. Obviously, we didn't know at the time that Elf being the support act would end up being so significant in the Purple family tree. I had a tape of the Kilburn show back when I was a teenager and I played it until it went all wow and flutter and spooled out into the machine. That show was so great and really fuelled the fire of rock n roll in me. And for that, I'll always be grateful.
