He is best known for his work with the bands The Alan Bown Set, Bronco, The Butts Band, and The Humans, as well as his own Jess Roden Band. They recorded this live album at Leicester University and Birmingham Town Hall.
Roden was born in Kidderminster, Worcestershire, England. He began his musical career in the early 1960s with the band The Raiders. In 1966, he joined The Alan Bown Set, where he remained until 1969. With The Alan Bown Set, Roden recorded several albums and singles, including the hit single "Emergency 999".
In 1969, he left The Alan Bown Set and formed the band Bronco with guitarist Kevyn Gammond and keyboard player August Eadon. Bronco released two albums, Bronco (1970) and The Harder They Come (1971), before disbanding in 1972.
In 1973, he joined the Butts Band, a group formed by ex-Doors members John Densmore and Robby Krieger. The Butts Band released one self-titled album in 1973 before disbanding in 1974. That's a great album actually.
In 1974 he released his first solo album, recorded in New Orleans with Allen Toussaint and The Meters. The Return of the Grievous Angel (1976) and Jess Roden (1979) were other solo releases.
Roden is a highly respected singer and songwriter with a long and varied career. He has been praised for his powerful vocals, his songwriting skills, and his ability to connect with audiences. He is a true original who has carved out his own unique niche in the world of rock music.
