Great Rock Venues : Queens Hall Leeds

Great Rock Venues : Queens Hall Leeds
Authored By John Nicholson

Originally a tram and bus depot built at the turn of the century

It was converted into a music venue in 1961 capable of holding 5,000 people! It was a remarkable cavernous space that hosted gigs by all the big touring rock bands including Rush, Pink Floyd, The Who and the Beatles to name a few. Motorhead complained the acoustics were terrible and that it was freezing cold. It was largely just exposed brick and glass, so that's no surprise. Hard to imagine such a place even being given a licence to put gigs on these days. As it was falling apart and probably dangerous, it was completely demolished in 1989 but just occasionally you can still hear the ghost of a riff still echoing into the night.
