What you’re listening for is the riffs...

Although I talk a lot about old records from 40 or 50 years ago, I love rock of the 80s and 90s. You have to know where the good stuff is, perhaps it isn’t as easy to land upon gold in 1990 as it is in 1973, but it’s there all the same.
One of my favourites is Wicked Sensation by Lynch Mob featuring George Lynch released in 1990. It’s what I characterise as a song n shred which is to say, the guitars are wild, with loads of high octane soloing, super-fast playing of scales and pinching of strings, added to powerful vocals by Oni Logan.
Produced by Max Norman, with 12-tracks, it sounds fantastic. Really powerful. Lynch is a brilliant player but unlike most shredders, he doesn't do self indulgence. There’s no 9-minute guitar solos, all the songs are under 5-minutes and though each has a solo, it’s in and out quickly. What you’re listening for is the riffs, which are really inventive and rhythm’s that are pounding and occasionally offbeat. There’s some really brilliant chords in amongst the riffs. They sort of open out after the tightness of the riffs. It’s very effective.
The record reached #46 on the charts and came out at the end of the glam metal era. They went through lots of line-up changes and made their last album recently but the first is the best.
