The film was released on Christmas day 1973. It includes several of Scott Joplin's ragtime compositions, adapted by Marvin Hamlisch. As a result, ragtime experienced a revival in the 1970s. It went gold in America, selling half a million and sold 100,000 in the UK, topping the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. The theme song was everywhere in 1974, and every kid I knew who could play piano used to play it, leaving rock kids like me to feel very inadequate. Yeah, but can you play Space Truckin’, mate?
